Apple is unveiling new Mac mini and Mac Studio models equipped with the M6 and M5 Ultra chips. This new generation emphasizes overall performance, energy efficiency, and local execution of AI-related tasks.
Enhanced Chip Capabilities
The M6 marks a significant milestone for Apple Silicon, featuring a 2 nm lithography process. The chip integrates a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and a 16-core Dual Neural Engine specifically designed for AI processing. Apple highlights notable gains in performance and energy efficiency suitable for everyday use, development work, and locally executed tasks.
Meanwhile, the M5 Ultra is positioned as Apple's most powerful chip. It utilizes UltraFusion technology, connecting two M5 Max double-die chips to form Apple Silicon’s first quad-die architecture. This system can integrate up to 36 cores in a CPU and up to 80 cores in a GPU, boasting unified memory bandwidth that reaches 1.2 Tb/s. These advanced capabilities specifically enable the local execution of complex AI models requiring substantial computational and memory resources.
Model Lineup and Connectivity Updates
The new Mac mini is available with the M6 or M5 Pro chip, while the Mac Studio offers options with the M5 Max or M5 Ultra chips. The new models will be ready for pre-order starting August 25, with general availability scheduled for September 22.
In addition to performance boosts, the machines support modern connectivity standards including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The Mac mini now features built-in 2.5 Gb/s Ethernet, with an option for a 10 Gb/s setup. Externally, their design remains largely similar to previous generations.
With the introduction of the M6 and M5 Ultra chips, Apple is significantly enhancing its desktop Mac lineup, optimizing it for demanding professional tasks and cutting-edge local execution of AI models.
