SpaceX has finalized the acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind the programming agent Cursor, in an all-stock deal that values the company at $60 billion. This purchase significantly enhances SpaceX's artificial intelligence activities, building on its earlier integration of xAI this year.
Acquisition Details and History
The transaction became effective on August 14, approximately two months after SpaceX and Anysphere signed the definitive agreement. The deal stipulated an all-stock exchange based on a $60 billion valuation for Cursor.
Initial collaboration between the two companies began in April with a partnership aimed at accelerating the training of Cursor's models by utilizing SpaceX’s extensive computational capabilities. This preliminary agreement also provided SpaceX with an option allowing it to acquire Anysphere later.
In June, shortly after its IPO, SpaceX confirmed its intention to exercise this option and subsequently signed the definitive agreement. With the operation finalized, Cursor is now a subsidiary of SpaceX and joins the company's dedicated artificial intelligence operations.
Founded in 2022 by Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger, Anysphere develops Cursor, an AI-centric development environment that assists developers with writing and modifying code.
Strategic Importance for AI Development
A primary benefit highlighted by Cursor is its immediate access to SpaceX's massive compute capabilities. The company states it now possesses the world’s largest GPU cluster available for training more powerful models while simultaneously helping to reduce operating costs.
This acquisition also allows SpaceX to strengthen its presence in artificial intelligence tools designed for both developers and businesses—a market where major competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic are also developing their own AI-assisted programming solutions.
Cursor stated its intention to continue developing its tools within the SpaceX group, with the goal of offering more powerful models while maintaining lower usage costs for users.
