Apple enters the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo. This new model features a dual screen around a titanium hinge, incorporating a 7.6-inch inner display, the A20 Pro chip, and an iOS 27 version tailored for various foldable usage modes.
Physical Design and Construction
The iPhone Duo introduces a foldable design to the iPhone lineup for the first time. When closed, the device utilizes a 5.4-inch outer screen. When opened, it features a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display, making it the largest screen ever integrated into an iPhone. To enhance visibility, Apple uses a nano-textured finish on the inner display to reduce glare and minimize the visibility of the crease.
The structure is built upon a grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover. Additionally, Apple adds Ceramic Shield protection on the exterior, incorporates a scratch-resistant coating on the internal screen, and achieves IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. The device will be offered in two finishes: Star White and Night Sky.
Software Enhancements with iOS 27
The foldable format is supported by specific adaptations within iOS 27. The interface dynamically reacts to the opening, closing, and different orientations of the device. For example, Split View allows users to run two applications side-by-side on the inner screen. The phone can also be placed partially folded for various functions—such as watching a video or making a FaceTime call—without requiring the user to hold it in place.
Performance and Battery Life
Powering the iPhone Duo is the A20 Pro chip, which is paired with a dual 16-core Neural Engine and a vapor chamber cooling system. Apple announces that this six-core processor is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro and offers up to 50% additional memory bandwidth. To manage power, a two-battery system distributes capacity between the device's two parts. This configuration promises exceptional endurance: users can expect up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner screen or up to 44 hours with the outer screen.
Advanced Photography Capabilities
For capturing images and videos, Apple integrates a Dual Fusion system composed of a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens. The outer screen houses a 12-megapixel Center Stage sensor, while a dedicated FaceTime camera is concealed beneath the inner display. Furthermore, the second screen allows the photographed person to preview the image, and new features utilize the phone's various positions for enhanced photos and video calls.
With the iPhone Duo, Apple adapts its approach to the iPhone by adopting a completely new hardware format rather than simply adding a foldable screen.
